Anesthesiology

The LAASER team includes a board-certified specialist in anesthesiology and pain management. If your pet is referred to LAASER for a problem or injury requiring advanced surgical or medical intervention, the anesthesiologist will be involved in discussing/planning every phase of the sedative or general anesthetic procedure in order to produce the best management plan. Our anesthesiologist is Dr. Stefano Di Concetto.

Veterinary anesthesiologists undergo advanced training and have access to a wide selection of drugs and state-of-the-art techniques and strategies to control a pet’s anxiety in an unfamiliar environment and optimize pain control before, during and after surgery.

The anesthesiologist routinely performs a thorough physical exam on each patient, reviews pre-existing diseases and can prescribe specific tests to assess an animal’s anesthetic risk and develop the safest anesthetic protocol in preparation for a complex procedure.

Anesthesiologists make use of a variety of routine and advanced monitoring techniques to ensure that an animal’s vital parameters, like heart and respiration rate, blood pressure and body temperature are maintained within the normal range for the entire duration of a procedure. Thorough and consistent monitoring allows the anesthesiologist to promptly intervene and minimize the risk of anesthesia-related complications, particularly in pediatric, geriatric and critical patients.

Recovery from general anesthesia is a very delicate phase during which an animal gradually regains consciousness. Extensive studies have shown that the risk of complications persists and is particularly high during the hours following recovery. Additionally, as general anesthesia wears off, the animal’s perception of pain after surgery may become more intense. For this reason, the anesthesiologist will continue to monitor the patient’s vital parameters, provide supportive therapy and frequently reassess and treat pain as needed. The ultimate goal is to ensure the best possible patient comfort and smoothest return to normalcy.

Our anesthesia service offers:

  • Anesthetic risk assessment
  • Patient-specific anesthetic plan
  • Mechanical ventilation for open chest procedures
  • Inhaled and exhaled gas monitoring
  • Invasive systemic blood pressure monitoring
  • Advanced pain management strategies:
    • Epidural anesthesia
    • A wide range of ultrasound-guided specific nerve blocks with local anesthetics
    • Continuous targeted intravenous infusion of analgesic drug combinations
  • Advanced post-operative patient care and pain management

The benefits of having a full-time anesthesiologist in our specialty and emergency hospital include: a dedicated board-certified clinician who can develop patient-specific anesthetic plans; a team member who can focus exclusively on patient monitoring and prevention and treatment of anesthetic complications while the surgery team is concentrated on complex procedures; the availability of advanced analgesic techniques that can drastically reduce or abolish an animal’s perception of pain during and after invasive surgeries; intensive patient care and follow-up during and after recovery from general anesthesia.
